LLR Highly Commended for Virtual or Remote Care Initiative of the year
We're thrilled to announce that Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland’s (LLR) Connected Care Programme has won a Highly Commended Award at the HSJ Patient Safety Awards 2024.
The programme uses Whzan remote technology to reduce avoidable hospital admissions for residents of care homes, especially for those with additional needs.
An incredible 415 entries were received for the 2024 HSJ Patient Safety Awards, with 206 organisations, projects and individuals making it to the final shortlist. They then went through two rounds of rigorous judging, overseen by an impressive panel of highly influential and respected figures within the healthcare community.
All those in attendance on Monday evening were pleased to applaud and acknowledge the incredible efforts and achievement of collaborative teams and individuals across the UK, committed to delivering improved patient care and a culture of safety.
The Connected Care Programme was developed jointly between the LLR Integrated Care Board, Leicester City Council, Leicestershire County Council and Rutland County Council.
Powering the programme is Whzan’s Blue Box, which collects automated NEWS2 scores and other health readings from residents. This allows staff within the care home to have more confidence in decision-making and when to escalate concerns. Carers are able to use NEWS2 as a common language when having conversations with outside support such as GPs, reducing confusion and improving response.
In addition, not only has there been a noticeable reduction in hospital admissions and ambulance callouts, LLR demonstrated savings of £600,000 in just four months during an evaluation period.
Now being scaled across LLR, it provides life-changing opportunities to all care homes to connect digitally, reducing harm from extended hospital stays and improving outcomes for both residents and staff.
Editor of the Health Service Journal, Alastair McLellan, commented; "...It gives me great pleasure to congratulate all those who were highly commended, including LLR in the category of Virtual and Remote monitoring Initiative of the year.
“The aim of this years’ conference was to provide a space for ‘honest conversations’ about how to create safety in a system under pressure – and I really believe that our winners this year truly reflected and represented this ethos”
He adds; “Once again, it’s been so heartening to see such a huge level of entries, submitted by hard-working and dedicated teams who, in these ongoing times of budget uncertainty and workforce shortages, are striving to deliver improved patient care and to ensure patient safety, education and wellbeing is at the heart of decision making at all levels.”
