It might be a resident’s blood pressure, a client’s temperature or a set of observations taken because someone does not seem quite themselves.

That information needs to be available to the right people, but it also needs to be handled carefully. Whzan is designed to help care homes, homecare providers and the NHS do both.

Securely stored in the UK

Information recorded through Whzan is stored securely in Microsoft Azure’s UK data centres.

This gives care providers confidence that the information they rely on is held within a secure, UK-based cloud environment.

For staff, the process is simple. They take and record an observation, then the information is made available to authorised users who need it to support that person’s care.

Clear roles and responsibilities

The care provider remains responsible for the information it records and how it is used.

Whzan provides the technology that processes and stores that information on the provider’s behalf.

This means care homes and homecare organisations stay in control of their data, while Whzan provides the systems and safeguards needed to support them.

Only the usage information we need

The only usage information Whzan collects is the number of observations taken through the platform.

This helps us understand how the system is being used and allows us to support clients more effectively.

For example, it can help us identify when a service may need technical support, understand how well a new implementation is being adopted, see where extra guidance or training may be useful and plan ahead so the platform continues to run reliably.

We do not access or store confidential client information for our own purposes.

Helping care teams use information well

Whzan helps providers make important care information available to authorised users.

In practice, that could mean helping a care home team share clear observations when speaking to a clinician, or helping a homecare provider respond more confidently when a client’s health appears to be changing.

The aim is straightforward: the right information, available to the right people, when it is needed.

Built around recognised standards

Whzan’s approach to data security and quality is supported by recognised standards, including Cyber Essentials Plus, the NHS Data Security and Protection Toolkit, and an ISO 13485:2016 certified quality management system.

These provide further assurance that information security, risk and quality are managed through clear, regularly reviewed processes.

Supporting good governance

GDPR is not just about policies and paperwork. It is about making sure people’s information is treated with care.

For providers, that means being able to explain where information is stored, who can access it and how it is being protected.

Whzan supports that responsibility through secure UK-based hosting, controlled access and clear data-processing arrangements.

Because behind every observation is a real person. Protecting their information is part of protecting their dignity, their confidence and the quality of care they receive.

For any more information on data security, please get in touch - we'd love to hear from you.

Good governance is more than a box to tick https://www.whzan.uk/good-governance-is-more-than-a-tickbox/ https://www.whzan.uk/good-governance-is-more-than-a-tickbox/#respond Thu, 06 Aug 2026 16:17:34 +0000 https://www.whzan.uk/?p=222932 Solcom Ltd, the company behind Whzan, has achieved ISO 13485:2016 certification, reflecting a broader commitment to quality, security, transparency and responsible supplier practice.

We often talk about how the Whzan Blue Box and platform help care teams evidence good practice. They support more consistent observations, clearer escalation, better oversight and a stronger record of what has happened for each person in their care.

The same principle applies to us as a business.

Technology used in health and care has to do more than work well on a demonstration screen. It needs to be reliable in busy services. It needs to protect sensitive information. It needs to be developed carefully, supported properly and improved over time. Most importantly, the organisations using it need confidence in the people and processes behind it.

That is why Solcom Ltd, the company behind Whzan, is pleased to have achieved ISO 13485:2016 certification for its medical device quality management system. The certification covers the design, development, validation, maintenance and support of software as a medical device, as well as the distribution of associated medical devices.

For Whzan and the clients we support, this is an important step. It gives additional structure to the way we manage product development, documentation, validation and ongoing improvement. It also reflects the responsibility that comes with providing technology used across NHS, care homes, homecare and private healthcare settings.

It does not sit on its own.

Solcom has held ISO 9001 quality management certification since 2016 and ISO/IEC 27001 information security certification since 2022. Together, these standards support the everyday systems that sit behind our work: how we manage quality, how we protect information, how we review risk and how we keep improving.

We also hold Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus for the whole organisation. Cyber Essentials Plus adds independent technical testing, giving clients further reassurance that core cyber controls are not just documented, but checked in practice.

For health and care partners, data assurance is equally important. Solcom has completed the NHS Data Security and Protection Toolkit for 2025-26 with Standards Exceeded, providing recognised assurance that we practise good data security and handle personal information correctly. We are also certified against the TSA TEC Quality Standards Framework for telehealth monitoring supply, a sector-specific framework focused on quality, safety, user experience, information governance, business continuity, ethics and continuous improvement.

That wider picture matters because procurement teams, clinical leads, care operators and commissioners are rightly looking beyond product features. They want to know whether a supplier is safe to work with, whether its processes are mature, and whether it understands the standards expected across health and social care.

We also know assurance is not only about data and technology. Whzan has recently achieved NHS Evergreen Level 2, reflecting progress against NHS sustainability expectations. We publish our annual Carbon Reduction Plan and Modern Slavery statement on our website, have completed the Modern Slavery Assessment Tool with a score of 81%, and are working towards ISO 14001 environmental management certification.

None of this is about collecting badges for the sake of it. It is about giving clients confidence that the same discipline we encourage through our technology is part of the way we operate ourselves.

Good governance should be practical. It should make decisions clearer, risks easier to manage and services safer to run. That is true for the care teams using Whzan, and it is true for Whzan as their technology partner. As health and care services face increasing pressure, the need for trusted suppliers will only grow. We believe reassurance should be earned, evidenced and kept up to date. The certifications and assurance work behind Solcom and Whzan are part of that commitment.

Strengthening Well-Led https://www.whzan.uk/strengthening-well-led/ https://www.whzan.uk/strengthening-well-led/#respond Mon, 18 May 2026 10:30:55 +0000 https://www.whzan.uk/?p=222840 Supporting confident, connected care in today’s landscape

Across the care sector, the focus on leadership has never been stronger.

With the Care Quality Commission placing increasing emphasis on what it means to be Well-Led, providers are being asked not only how care is delivered, but how it is supported, evidenced and continuously improved.

Well-Led is no longer just about governance structures or policies. It is about culture, confidence and oversight. It is about how teams collaborate, how decisions are made, and how leaders maintain oversight across increasingly complex services.

As care becomes increasingly distributed across homes and communities, maintaining coordination and consistency across services is becoming more important than ever.

From oversight to real visibility

One of the key challenges providers face is maintaining clear oversight.

Leaders are responsible for understanding what is happening across their service, often spanning multiple locations, teams and shifts. Traditionally, this has relied on documentation, spot checks and professional judgement.

Increasingly, providers are looking to strengthen this with more real-time insight.

Structured approaches to monitoring create a more complete picture of day-to-day care, particularly when supported by connected digital tools such as the Whzan Blue Box. By enabling carers to consistently record health observations, services can gain clearer oversight of wellbeing across homes and teams.

When observations are captured reliably and trends can be reviewed over time, it becomes easier to recognise patterns, understand emerging concerns and intervene appropriately where needed.

This is not about replacing professional judgement. It is about strengthening it with shared, reliable information.

Confidence image

Supporting confident decision making

A key aspect of Well-Led is ensuring teams feel confident making decisions in the moment.

For carers and nurses, this means recognising when something has changed and knowing what to do next. For leaders, it means having confidence that concerns are being identified, communicated and acted upon appropriately.

Frameworks such as National Early Warning Score 2 (NEWS2) support this by providing a common language across health and care.

Embedding these frameworks into everyday workflows enables teams to assess, record and share information clearly and confidently at the point of care. With solutions such as the Whzan Blue Box, carers can complete assessments including NEWS2 during visits and share information using a recognised clinical language.

This improves communication with healthcare professionals and helps ensure concerns are escalated appropriately.

Building a culture of accountability and learning

Well-Led services are characterised by openness, accountability and continuous improvement.

Access to reliable, meaningful information makes it easier to review care, understand decisions and identify opportunities to improve.

Bringing together observations, assessments and trends in one place can give leaders a clearer understanding of what is happening across their service. Platforms such as Whzan can help managers review wellbeing trends, monitor escalation activity and maintain greater visibility across teams and locations.

This helps encourage a more proactive approach to care.

Rather than responding only when concerns escalate, teams are better able to identify subtle changes sooner and take appropriate action.

Demonstrating quality in practice

CQC inspections increasingly focus on how providers evidence the quality and safety of care, particularly within the Safe, Effective and Well-Led domains.

Clear records of observations, assessments, and actions helps consistently demonstrate this.

Providers using digital monitoring systems such as Whzan often report improved understanding of resident wellbeing and stronger documentation, helping strengthen oversight and inspection readiness across organisations.

In some cases, services have seen improvements in inspection outcomes following the introduction of more effective monitoring approaches supported by digital tools.

Designed for real-world care

For any approach to be effective, it needs to fit naturally into day-to-day care.

The most effective technologies are those that help carers capture observations, complete assessments and communicate concerns easily, without adding unnecessary complexity or workload. This has been a key focus behind the latest Whzan Blue Box, which was redesigned to be smaller, lighter and easier to carry between domiciliary visits while retaining full functionality.

As care continues to move beyond hospital settings and into homes and communities, there is a growing demand for scalable, intuitive solutions that are easy to adopt across different services.

Looking ahead

As expectations around Well-Led continue to evolve, the need for oversight, clarity and informed decision making will only increase.

By combining strong leadership with joined-up approaches to monitoring and communication, providers can strengthen their ability to deliver safe, effective and responsive care.

At Whzan Digital Health, we provide connected remote monitoring solutions that help teams recognise change earlier, share clinically useful health information and deliver more proactive care across homes, communities and services. Our Whzan Blue Box enables carers to carry out structured digital health checks and share clinically useful information using NHS-recognised frameworks such as NEWS2.

Today, Whzan technology is used in more than 3,000 care settings across the UK, supporting over 179,000 people and generating more than 4.9 million vital sign readings.

Introducing the new Whzan https://www.whzan.uk/introducing-the-new-whzan/ https://www.whzan.uk/introducing-the-new-whzan/#respond Wed, 15 Apr 2026 09:33:20 +0000 https://home.whzan.com/?p=222625 A clearer, more connected way to support care beyond hospital walls.

Care has changed.

It no longer happens in one place or within the walls of a single organisation. It happens across homes, communities and services, often involving carers, clinicians and multiple teams working together around the same person.

And as care has evolved, we’ve been asking a simple question. Are the tools supporting care keeping up?

Over the past year, we’ve spent time with carers, clinicians, providers and partners across the UK. We’ve listened to how care really works. The pace. The pressure. The movement between visits. And the importance of feeling confident in the moment.

What we heard was consistent.

Care and clinical teams don’t need more complexity. They need clarity. They need connection. They need tools that fit into real-world care.

So we’ve evolved Whzan.

A clearer Whzan

You’ll notice it straight away.

We’ve introduced a refreshed brand and website, designed to feel clearer, more confident and easier to navigate. It reflects who we are today. A connected digital health partner supporting care beyond hospital walls.

But this isn’t just about how things look.

It’s about making everything feel more joined-up, more intuitive, and more aligned with how care is actually delivered.

New Whzan

A Blue Box designed for real visits

The Blue Box has always been at the heart of Whzan, supporting carers and clinicians in conducting digital health and wellbeing checks and capturing vital health information.

Now, it’s been redesigned.

The new Blue Box is nearly half the size and around one-third lighter than before, without losing any functionality. It is easier to carry between visits and is designed to fit naturally into domiciliary care.

Because care doesn’t happen in one place.

It happens on the move, between homes, across communities and within busy schedules. The Blue Box now reflects that reality.

Introducing Blue Box Lite

We’ve also introduced something new.

Blue Box Lite is a flexible way to support remote monitoring and virtual ward pathways, without the need for a full hardware setup.

It enables organisations to record and review health observations using existing equipment or patient-reported readings, making it easier to extend monitoring across services and settings.

It’s about making connected care easier to scale across services, including NHS pathways such as virtual wards and community-based care.

From visit to shared insight

At the centre of Whzan is a simple idea. A single visit can tell a much bigger story.

Whzan supports carers in recording structured health observations, such as blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and temperature, consistently. This information is presented using recognised NHS frameworks, such as NEWS2, to help teams communicate clearly and confidently with clinicians and other healthcare professionals.

Built around real care

Today, Whzan is used across the UK by integrated care systems, NHS and community providers, local authorities, care homes and homecare organisations.

This includes North Central London ICB, Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland partners, and Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust working with the county council, alongside homecare providers such as SureCare and Bluebird Care.

That experience has shaped everything we’ve changed.

A more connected future for care

This is not just a product update. It is a step forward in how care is supported.

This reflects the direction set out in the NHS 10 Year Plan, with a growing focus on community-based care, digital transformation and prevention.

“Care today happens across homes, communities and services,” says Alex, CEO of Whzan.

“Our focus has been on making Whzan clearer, more connected and more practical, supporting carers and clinicians with structured information that helps them work together and make confident decisions.”

We believe care works best when it is connected.

When information flows.
When teams collaborate.
When carers and clinicians feel confident.
And when people can stay well, wherever they call home, beyond hospital walls.

This is the new Whzan

A clearer experience.
A more practical Blue Box.
A flexible approach to remote monitoring.

All working together to support care as it really happens today.

Supporting Community Wellness Outreach in Reading https://www.whzan.uk/community-wellness-reading/ https://www.whzan.uk/community-wellness-reading/#respond Fri, 27 Jun 2025 08:51:24 +0000 https://home.whzan.com/?p=222772 At Whzan, we were delighted to read about the Community Wellness Outreach taking place across Reading this summer - and even prouder to see our technology supporting such a meaningful initiative.

Led by Reading Voluntary Action (RVA) and funded by the local NHS Integrated Care Board, this programme is a brilliant example of what can be achieved when healthcare meets people wherever they may be. By offering free NHS Health Checks in trusted community settings, the outreach is connecting with vulnerable residents who may be less likely to attend traditional appointments, particularly those at higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

We always like to hear about forward-thinking health programmes that blend clinical care with a strong community presence. The use of portable digital tools, like the Whzan Blue Box, help ensure checks can be delivered quickly, safely and accurately in non-clinical environments, from community centres to libraries.

What’s Happening?

Qualified nurses are delivering full NHS Health Checks, assessing key indicators such as blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI and lifestyle risk factors. Attendees can receive tailored advice and signposting to local support, from GP follow-ups and stop-smoking services, to social prescribing and wellbeing groups.

A Model for Local Prevention

This is exactly the kind of community-first approach we champion at Whzan: proactive, preventative care that is made accessible to all. By meeting people in spaces they trust, with tools that make data capture seamless, this outreach helps turn a simple check into the first step on a healthier journey.

Whether someone learns their risk score, receives a referral, or connects with a local fitness or nutrition programme, every outcome moves us closer to a personalised and joined-up system of care.

Technology in Action

We’re proud that Whzan’s portable health monitoring kit supports NHS Health Checks and patients. Our Blue Box, commonly used in care homes, domiciliary care and virtual wards, helps nurses perform vital sign checks and quickly assess a person’s health.

It’s an inspiring model of what’s possible when partnerships between the NHS, local charities and digital tools come together for the good of the community.

Whzan Blue Box reduces hospital admissions & 999 calls in Surrey https://www.whzan.uk/blue-box-reduces-hospital-admissions/ https://www.whzan.uk/blue-box-reduces-hospital-admissions/#respond Sat, 01 Jun 2024 15:19:12 +0000 https://home.whzan.com/?p=222751 Since launching in 2011, Whzan technology has been adopted across a nationwide range of care settings to improve the health of vulnerable people, supporting the work of care professionals and relieving the strain on the NHS.

Primarily known for our Blue Box and Virtual Wards, our tech is now used to monitor over 140,000 patients daily across the UK – delivering accurate assessments, informing crucial decision-making and protecting people at risk of deterioration.

Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex has supported the implementation of the Whzan Digital Health Blue Box in care homes for over five years.

Following a small pilot a few years before, by October 2023, 60 Blue Boxes had been set up in 40 homes in Surrey, with 400 NEWS2 assessments submitted each month.

Their findings showed a 53% reduction in hospital admissions, 41% reduction in 999 calls and a 36% reduction in unplanned GP visits.

A wider report by Health Innovation NENC showed eight care homes made savings of more than £750,000 in one year by using The Blue Box.

Paula Hook, Registered Manager at Woking Homes commented…

“The Blue Box is a must for every home. We’ve been using them for about a year, and they’ve really transformed things for us. We no longer need to contact the doctor every time we’re worried about a resident – we have the data to help us. The Blue Boxes give the staff confidence in what they’re doing and keep everyone reassured including the residents as they get to know what is normal for them. Our relationship with our GPs has improved because we don’t have to call them out so often.”

We’re delighted that we’ve been able to help

Whzan technology bringing almost £2m in savings in Leicestershire and Essex https://www.whzan.uk/whzan-tech-savings/ https://www.whzan.uk/whzan-tech-savings/#respond Thu, 15 Feb 2024 15:25:00 +0000 https://home.whzan.com/?p=222758 A promise we make to those buying Whzan technology is, if implemented and used properly, it will make a tangible, measurable and significant difference. It’s specifically designed to enhance patient and resident assessments, enable confident decision-making and deliver significant savings in time, resources and money.

Recent reports from two regions who have implemented Whzan products over the past couple of years detail their experiences using Whzan and the significant results they’ve seen.

LLR (Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland) Connected Care Programme

LLR ICS Connected Care Programme recently ran a pilot of digital deterioration monitoring tools in care homes across the region. This pilot saw Blue Boxes deployed in 32 care homes to measure resident vital signs and escalate concerns.

A report was recently published on the initial results of this pilot - these were the findings:

  • So far, homes have taken over 5,800 observations – 422 of these were full NEWS2 scores
  • There had been a noticeable reduction in hospital admissions and ambulance callouts
  • Communication between homes and GPs/nurses had also improved
  • Learning disability homes especially benefitted
  • Estimated savings were over £600,000 over four months
  • Further savings were likely if the pilot was expanded

The full report put together by the wonderful Tara at These Hands Academy can be found below.

LLR Evaluation Final Report

Mid and South Essex ICS

Mid and South Essex ICS established two virtual wards in January 2022 – Respiratory and Frailty. The aim being to provide hospital-level care at home, avoiding admissions and enabling early discharge.

A report was published, analysing the impact, performance, outcomes and lessons of the virtual wards between January and July 2022. The results were as follows:

  • There was an estimated reduction of 1,406 acute hospital bed days, this brought an estimated saving of £1.3m
  • The monthly savings are estimated to be £100,347 in the Respiratory ward and £230,202 in the Frailty ward
  • Other positive outcomes included increased patient independence reduced infections and low readmissions

Recommendations of the back of these findings were to optimise operations, expand capacity, address existing barriers and continue the evaluation.

Again, you can read the full report below

Mid and South Essex Evaluation Report

Outcomes like these are exactly what we set out to achieve with our technology.

Organisations with limited budgets are seeing huge savings and their people are able to deliver a better service for their patients and residents. Most importantly, vulnerable individuals are being kept out of hospital and able to live healthier lives in the place they call home.

NHS using Whzan for Annual Physical Health Checks https://www.whzan.uk/annual-physical-health-checks/ https://www.whzan.uk/annual-physical-health-checks/#respond Thu, 15 Feb 2024 14:20:00 +0000 https://home.whzan.com/?p=222746 More regions using Whzan for Annual Physical Health Checks (APHC) for patients with serious mental illness (SMI).

Since its launch in 2011, the Whzan Blue Box has been responsible for transforming how health assessments are completed with minimal clinical training, supporting hundreds of thousands of people in the place they call home.transformed how health assessments are conducted with minimal clinical training, supporting hundreds of thousands of people in the places

More recently, one of our missions is to help facilitate better care for people who are harder to reach, or whose circumstances mean they may not have immediate access to technology that can help them.

NHS regions across the country are now using our Blue Box to support annual physical health checks for patients with serious mental illness (SMI).

A key challenge facing those responsible caring for people with SMI is keeping up-to-date with regular comprehensive data on their overall health.

They’re often reluctant to attend hospitals or doctor’s surgeries and many are homeless.

To support these vulnerable people the standard Blue Box is enhanced to provide a full digitised SMI health check, in accordance with NICE guidance. The six parameters are:

  • alcohol consumption status.
  • blood glucose or HbA1c test
  • blood pressure.
  • body mass index.
  • lipid profile.
  • smoking status

Our data is interoperable with the most commonly used Electronic Patient Record Systems using a single NHS login. Data can be pulled from, and transferred to these EPR’s including Access Rio, Systmone & EMIS automatically, or at the touch of a single button. This means clinicians have immediate access to help those who need it most.

NHS ICB’s including Rotherham, Sheffield, Essex, Kent, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, East London, South London & Hampshire are reporting that they are seeing an upturn in health checks conducted.

The portability of the kit means healthcare professionals can see patients in environments where they feel most comfortable.

We're delighted to be helping to make a difference.

IOW NHS Trust & ARNS film shows Whzan-powered Virtual Ward in action https://www.whzan.uk/whzan-virtual-ward-iow/ https://www.whzan.uk/whzan-virtual-ward-iow/#respond Fri, 15 Sep 2023 16:01:00 +0000 https://home.whzan.com/?p=222767 Our friends at NHS Isle of Wight Respiratory Virtual Ward and the Association of Respiratory Nurses have been featured in an ITN Business Hub film showing how their Whzan Virtual Wards are helping patients.

Always a progressive partner, their use of Whzan technology is caring for patients in the place they call home, with a variety of conditions including respiratory, OPAT and frailty. This is aiding faster recovery and reducing hospital-acquired infections.

The portable Blue Box is used to take vital signs, NEWS2 scores and any other relevant assessments as detailed in the patient's personal care plan. Patient data from the Bluetooth instruments is recorded on a tablet, and then automatically transferred to a central Virtual Ward hub, where specialist nurses are on hand to monitor and look for any changes/deteriorations that need escalation.

With 26 places available at any one time, their Virtual Ward has helped hundreds of people stay out of hospital freeing up beds for emergency care. As NHS winter pressures are now amongst us, there are plans to expand this ward further.

As always, please get in touch for more information on how this could help you.
